Factors Affecting Draft

The idea that hot air rises is central to the operation of chimneys, which are designed to take advantage of this phenomenon. This is the fundamental principle behind how a chimney operates. This idea, which is also referred to as the stack effect, describes the phenomenon in which hot air and the combustion gases from the fire rise to the top of the chimney. After reaching the top of the chimney, the space that is left empty must be filled with cooler air, which then enables the hot air to continue ascending through the chimney flue and into the surrounding environment. When everything goes according to plan, all of the byproducts of combustion are expelled through the chimney, but none of the gases enter the chamber where they were produced. When there is a negative air pressure in a room and the hot air wants to escape down the chimney flue, but there isn’t enough space for it to do so because of the heat, problems can emerge. This results in a phenomenon known as a back draft, in which the air that is supposed to escape out the top of the chimney instead moves in the opposite direction and enters the house. Back drafting is a process that can occur in homes, and when it does, it can cause a problem by releasing dangerous chemicals and soot into the rooms of the house.

Because draft is a measure of pressure, the conditions of the pressure inside the home can have an effect on the chimney draft. A number of contributing factors are as follows:

Adequate Air
To begin, there needs to be sufficient air movement coming into the home to compensate for the air that is being exhausted through the chimney. If the house has particularly effective insulation, the amount of air that is sucked up the chimney will be greater than the volume of air that is brought into the house; as a result, the pressure inside the house will start to drop over time. Because the pressure inside the home is lower than the pressure outside, there will be a tendency for air to be attracted into the house through any opening that is accessible, including the chimney if there is one.

Movement of Air Inside the House
Second, there must not be any obstructions to the chimney caused by airflow within the home. Imagine a house where the windows on the upper floors are open. When the windows are opened, warm air from inside the house will flow out. When this happens, the entire home acts like a large chimney. The air that escapes through the windows in the upper floor is replaced by air that is pulled up from the lower level. This phenomenon is referred to as the stack effect, because the house functions much like a chimney. One of the causes could be that the windows on the second floor are open. A issue with stack effect could be caused by a poorly insulated roof, a drafty attic, a long stairwell, or anything else that permits a significant amount of hot air to depart the home above. If the stack effect is strong enough, it will be able to resist the upward draft created by the chimney and will cause replacement air (along with smoke) to be drawn into the house through the chimney.

Competition for Accessible Air
Third, there must not be an excessive amount of competition from other devices in the house, such as exhaust fans or air-exchange systems. This is especially important if there are multiple people living in the house. If there is something else that is drawing air out of the home, the chimney could not have enough power to compete with it, and exhaust might be brought into the home from the chimney.

Construction of the Chimney to Code
And finally, a chimney needs to be built in a way that allows it to support the amount and kind of exhaust that is produced by the appliances it is used with. This comprises ensuring that the dimensions are accurate, that the height is sufficient, that the construction is done correctly, and that appropriate building materials are used.

Problems with the chimney draft can be difficult to diagnose and fix because there are so many variables that influence it. In the sections on fireplaces and stoves, we will discuss how to diagnose and fix problems with the draft of the appliance.
